Issue #12: Discussing Issue #3
The first TDZ entry to gain traction was “Issue #3: I Think We're Already in WW3 and No One Realized That (Yet)”, and I thought it would be a good idea to discuss it (and its comment section) seven months later.
I will be dividing this issue in two main parts: Discussing the Issue and Discussing the Comment Section.
Discussing the Issue
Let’s start with the title.
“I Think We're Already in WW3 and No One Realized That (Yet)”
That’s pretty clickbait-y, isn’t it? I think that the “No One Realized That (Yet)” part wasn’t probably true at the time, but I still think we’re in some sort of war, maybe something like a civil war rather than a full-on World War.
☛ History Seems To Repeat Itself
This paragraph started with how WWI started, mentioning the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and then with analyzing (even if I think that word isn't right for it) the current world situation (the Russian-Ukrainian war, the Gazan war) and I mentioned the 2025 India–Pakistan conflict, which ultimately ended on May 10th. It then proceeds to describe the AI crisis (which we’ve already talked about here) and the possibility that Trump and Musk were trying to build a far-right dictatorship, and what a dictatorship actually is.
Associating the assassination of Franz Ferdinand to the current world conflicts might have been a stretch in May 2025 (as there was no assassination then to associate it to) and I think there is no event that could be compared to it to this day. Someone might think that C. K. 's death was the same thing to the death of Franz Ferdinand, as the killer was K. 's fellow countryman.
The Russian-Ukrainian and Israeli-Gazan situation is still pretty dire, and I still think that Trump is a sick (bad) individual that should probably be removed from his presidency.
☛ Why Anarchy Is The Best Solution
This paragraph introduces the idea that a governmentless society based on mutual respect is better than what’s going on in most (if not all) countries in the whole world.
While I still think it’d be great, it’s realistically impossible to live in anarchy, as there will always be someone that will disrespect someone else (e.g. committing a homicide, vandalising one’s belongings) and the ideal of an anarchistic society is something that, for a long time, will only be an utopistic reality. I don’t know why I added it to the original post, I think at the time I wanted people to believe I was a “true anarchist” and maybe I am, but I think it’s good to also know what could go wrong (or IS wrong) in the ideals you believe in.
☛ Generative Artificial Intelligence's Environmental Impact
This paragraph talks about GenAI’s impact on the environment, and how retrieving water to cool down servers makes AI companies take water away from the people that actually need it.
There’s a whole entry dedicated to this subject and what I think, so it’s probably best for you to read that one.
Discussing the Comment Section
There were a few comments out of 57 under that entry that I would like to discuss.
“I don't even know where to start with this, lmao. The entire thing reeks of brainwashed.
Knowledge is nothing without wisdom and discernment.
People with the mindset in this post are so... one-track-mind. Never looking at the big picture. Yes, Donald Trump is an egotistical nutjob. And Elon Musk is a greedy pothead who sides with whoever will make him richer. And Biden was a feeble, hypocritical sock puppet. And Kamala was a drunken liar, skating by on the promise of a black female president. And don't even get me started on the Clintons. Have you ever heard the phrase "the left and the right are just two wings on the same bird"? It's truer now than ever before.
"Left and right" are terms for the common folk to define themselves based on their viewpoints -- and NO politician will actually fulfill those desires, in either party. [...] Convincing yourself that one side is evil and will start WW3 though? Congrats, you're exactly where they want you to be: divided and afraid. Both sides are evil. Both sides are actively working against us.
If anyone is going to "start WW3" though, my bet is on Putin. He's getting way more reckless in his old age, and the older he gets, the less he's going to care. [...] The only thing keeping power-hungry world leaders from using the big red buttons is the fear of mutually assured destruction.
But on their deathbed, eventually *someone* will no longer be afraid, because they won't be around for the fallout.”
I think calling someone ‘brainwashed’ based only on one internet post is a little too much. I think that maybe ‘pretentious’ is the better alternative here, but aside from that, I think that there are some really good points here, such as politicians in either won't care enough to fulfill their citizens (?)’s desires, and that someone that could open the doors to a hypothetical WW3 would definitely be Putin.
“Alright, I'll try to be concise. I feel like this is a very US-centered perspective, and that it ignores the historical context that allowed WWI, and subsequentially WWII, to happen. Fascism did not rise out of nowhere. Italy had major economic issues, with an extremely high unemployment rate (caused by the end of WWI), and a nation currency, la lira, worth little to nothing. Italy had came out of WWI with basically nothing other than a bunch of dead young men, and that caused a lot of resentment in the population. And then il Biennio Rosso happened: a series of socialist insurrections that created further political instability.
People did not believe fascism was going to improve their lives just because they were naive. It was a period of serious political instability and extreme economic crisis, and Mussolini managed to gain power and consent through squadrismo.
Same thing goes for Germany. The rise of the Nazi party, whose policies mirrored at large the Fascist party in Italy, was possible because of the dire conditions in Germany after WWI. We also have to acknowledge the elephant in the room... nukes. War nowadays could very quickly become mutual destruction with the press of a couple of buttons. The arrival of nuclear weapons post WWII simply changed the way war works forever”
At the time I wrote that entry, I didn't research much on the topic of fascism. (As a fellow Italian!!) I think I should fix this mistake by writing a good whole issue about it.
Nuclear weapons are surely what we should be concerned about if an actual WW3 was to begin. The nukes we have today are way bigger than the ones used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, making Little Boy and Fat Man look like mere fireworks, if we were to compare them.
Just one of these modern bombs could wipe out more than the triple of Hiroshima’s nuclear victims.
“Holy fearmongering” (or some other variation)
I don't really have much to say about this, I can only say that fearmongering was definitely not my intention then.
If WW3 was to really happen, I hope at least we all get nuked off of the face of the Earth in its first days. Maybe it's a little extreme but that way, there's no chance of us doing any other damage.
